Montserrat College of Art

It is interesting to note that when I chose my college path I opted to pursue creative writing instead of art, I guess with the assumption that writing might be a more realistic path to having an income. Then in my senior year, a beloved writing professor admitted to my class that the chances of any of us being published was probably zilch. So I went back to doing what I really enjoyed, which was drawing, never having stepped foot in a college art class.

Fast forward thirty-some years and I find myself in Montserrat College of Art, not so much because of my drawing abilities, but because a severe depression led to the idea of I Am More and I never know where I will find myself. Director of Counseling Elisabeth Reickert invited us to share the message with the students and faculty of Montserrat, and for the first time Iain and I were off the hook and the exhibit was hung by actual gallery experts, and it shows!

Last week I had a chance to meet some of the staff and faculty, and a very special guest got a pass from his own college classes and stopped by:

Aiden with his portrait

On this day he was representing I Am More and The NAN Project where he serves as a Peer Mentor, but the rest of the time Aiden seems to be thriving in his university career and is now in the Honors Program at Salem State, studying psychology. Luckily the Montserrat Director of Admissions was present to meet him and told him about the possibilities of taking art classes there.

This week Montserrat students will be invited to the library to participate in a drop-in project called “I am more than…” so I’m looking forward to seeing what they create.

The Montserrat exhibit is open to the public during school hours and can be found at the address below.

  1. Oh Amy. I love how your art and vision, born out of such a difficult time, keep inviting others to reflect and grow. Your ability to see the other – and help them see their beautiful selves – is an incredible gift to the world.
